Wary Sugar for People with Diabetes

PATIENTS with diabetes often avoid sugar or other artificial sweeteners. But is it true, people with diabetes should not consume food or drinks that contain artificial sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners are usually several times more than the sweet sweet taste of natural sugar. However, it does not mean that diabetics should not eat sweet foods or drinks. Noteworthy is the selection of an appropriate sweetener that does not increase blood sugar levels in diabetics, as reported by Healthmeup.

Sunita Pathania, a nutritionist from Mumbai, warns people with diabetes to be more careful in the consumption of artificial sweeteners. Sunita recommends that diabetics should use artificial sweeteners are safe and in the right amount to prevent the increase in blood sugar levels. Artificial sweeteners are considered "free foods" because they do not count as carbohydrates or fats.

People with diabetes need to be careful with sugar alcohols such as mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol. Sugar alcohols (polyols) is a carbohydrate that occurs naturally in fruits and certain vegetables, it also deserves attention.

Consuming sugar alcohol can affect your blood sugar levels. It also can cause bloating, gas, or diarrhea. Although the number of calories from sugar alcohols are low, however, patients with diabetes have to remember that moderation is key to a healthy lifestyle. (ina)
